MERRILLVILLE | Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana and the NWI Veterans Action Council partnered in January, 2014 to provide housing for low-income local veterans in Lake County.That dream comes true this week, when the first Veterans Build home in dedicated in Merrillville
Danna Carter is the first Veterans Build home recipient. A single father and disabled veteran, he is raising his son. and applied for the home last summer and was accepted. “This has been a dream come true for us,” Carter said. “I am excited to see what the next chapter in my life brings.”
The home dedication will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Carter residence, 5905 Roosevelt St. Home dedications are open to the public and both Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana and the Northwest Indiana Veterans Action Council are encouraging community members to attend.
“It’s a heartwarming experience,” NIVAC chairman Michael Sparber said. “Those unable to attend the dedication will have a second chance to be involved at our Veterans Build Breakfast 2015.”
The Veterans Build Breakfast is a celebration of the completion of the first Veterans Build and a continuation of the partnership between the two organizations, set for 8:30 a.m. April 24 at St. Elijah Serbian American Hall, 8700 Taft St., Merrillville. Tickets are $25 and sponsorships are available.
